How working at Waffle House made me a better husband

Waffle House

This past summer marked the 10 year anniversary of my short, but eventful “career” at Waffle House.  First, I find it funny that places like Waffle House and McDonald’s use the word “career” on their job applications, knowing that the percentage of “career” employees they get is about the same as interest rates on a savings account at your local bank.  Career and Waffle House typically do not go together unless you are in management because there is no denying that Waffle House does make someone money.

Ten years ago, I think I was pulling home $7.50 per hour at the “Awful Waffle” which will the “progression” of the economy would be equal to about $7.49 today. Continue Reading…

Ingenious Business Plan involving Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow leadership

If you could package Tim Tebow leadership in a bottle and sell it to businessmen, husbands, and athletes you would be a gazillionaire.    Tebow continues to answer the question of “What is a Leader?”  “Tim has a presence about him that I’ve never been around before in terms of a guy in the locker room. I’ve played with some Hall of Fame players before, and it’s nowhere close to the aura that this guy has.”  This quote is from Broncos cornerback Andre Goodman.  When asked why Tim has such an aura, Goodman responded  “I can’t explain; that’s not for me to explain.” Continue Reading…

One tip to make thanksgiving dinner memorable

Recently my wife and I spent a good bit of time watching the Food Network. Now granted, if she wasn’t home, I would be more likely to be watching a ball game, but as one who enjoys eating, I have come to appreciate the Food Network. Something about watching food that you can’t smell or taste but that you know is really good, grabs my attention. Thanksgiving is a time to not only see, but taste and smell good food. If you have been making the same Thanksgiving dinner for your entire adult life, my challenge to you is to try something that you have never done that will wake cut way down on leftovers . Let me suggest deep frying a turkey to make it easier for your family to give thanks for the food.

Here is a video that explains the process from www.thefrugalchef.com

Thanksgiving Treat: How to Make a Turducken

Thanksgiving involves more eating than possibly any other day of the year.  Especially if you have more than one family dinner to attend, you may not want to eat on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.  If you are feeling a little crazy and would like to try a new Thanksgiving treat, then you should consider a turducken. A Stock Tip Worth Remembering

So let’s first start with the initial confession that I have only owned mutual funds through a boring IRA.  Never have I delved into the world of individual stocks through a broker or E-trade, though I certainly like the idea.  That being said as a disclaimer, sometimes I think people with good common sense are able to help those who maybe just are small time investors.  I don’t know about you, but in the past I have sat down at a table for a meeting with a couple of financial advisors.  I like talking to them.  The problem is that just like many mechanics, they seem to talk fast and use big financial words and concepts that lead me to believe, at the end of the day, the message they want you to hear most is “This is a little too complicated for you.  Just give me the money and I will make it all work.”  Continue Reading…

Manly Sports guide: How to play rugby

Yesterday was the final for the 2011 Rugby World Cup from New Zealand.  The New Zealand All Blacks defeated France 8-7 for the championship.  I actually watched part of the game and thought about how many sports that Americans don’t really understand how to play.  Continue Reading…

30 day pullup challenge final summary

So the 30 day pullup challenge turned into a 31 day pullup challenge that brought mediocre results.  My starting pullup max total was 9 which was a little higher than expected.  My end total was 16.  I was hoping to double the reps but it just didn’t happen.  The workout routine consisted of many sets of 5 reps and occasionally going for max reps for a test.  The 30 day pullup challenge served a couple of purposes.  Continue Reading…

College Football Week 7 Review and Week 8 Preview

Coppock’s Corner

WEEK 7: What We Learned

 1. Michigan is still Michigan

I put way too much faith in Denard Robinson’s ability and it bit me with my prediction last week. I thought for sure they would come in with a fire into the Michigan State game but for the second year, the Spartans stopped the Wolverines in their tracks. The Spartan defense looked as good as it has all year. Continue Reading…

What is a leader

In today’s confused society, simple questions have to be answered and explained that were taken for granted a generation ago. “What is a leader?” is not overly simply but it has become overly confused.  I am a new father and starting in the parenting stage of my own life, and I expect to have to explain things to my children that were not necessary to be explained to me.  Instead of getting on a soapbox of forgotten truths, I will briefly talk about what it means to be a leader.  Here are a few things that would fit the definition.
